Pardon Me...

Veer Zara. A Yash Chopra extravaganza. A love story to rival the greatest love stories of all time. Boasting the golden melodies of Madan Mohan and the brilliant performances of the nation’s favourite Khan, with two beautiful damsels to support him. What more could you want?

I don’t know the answer to that. But I do know what I don’t want. I don’t want to be subjected to three hours of clichés. Mr.Chopra tugged at every string he could, not leaving anything to chance. So he tossed in the elements and come up with a mind-blowing granola. The love-story with insurmountable difficulties that tore the lovers apart. The Hindu-Muslim conflict. The India-Pakistan war. The Partition. The commonalities between us - “sanskar” in the youth, loving parents, rich traditions preserved through the years… The childless couple who brought up their relatives orphaned child, and would but obviously have had an inter-community love marriage and been the pioneering couple of the village. The fields of golden corn (or was it wheat I saw) and colourful flowers in bloom. The patriotic songs of “Yeh mera desh hai aisa…jaisa desh hai tera.” The designer dresses and exquisite embroidery. And oh, let’s not forget the “bebe” (an old maid who served the family through-out her life and brought up the heroine) who maintained a child’s joie de vivre till the day she lay on her death-bed and decided she wants her ashes to be thrown into an Indian river, for after all, she was an Indian at heart, even though she had spent her entire life in Pakistan.

Pardon me for predicting every turn in the story.
Pardon me for questioning how Zara managed to fit half a dozen heavy salwar-kurtas and matching jewellery into a small rucksack.
Pardon me for wondering if all Punjabi farmers look as robust and wear as colourful clothes to the fields.
Pardon me for groaning as they belted out clichéd songs about the richness of their soil, and their traditions.
Pardon me for analyzing Kiron Kher’s nails & thinking she probably doesn’t lift a glass at home, as she inflicted another tear-jerking dialogue on the audience.
Pardon me for admiring the architecture and wondering if the monument is really in Pakistan, or that red fort next to the Taj Mahal, as Veer Pratap Singh lets his Zara know that she must marry the guy chosen by her parents and produce 8-10 children after which she can come visit him in his village and they can take a ride around it, on a bicycle…no, a tractor.
Pardon me for preferring the maid Shabbo’s simple clothes and the Punjabi farmers’ floral lungis over Zara’s richly embroidered ensembles.
Pardon me for remembering my friend Saima, who also has crochet done on all her dupattas to show that she is not a widow and regretting the fall-out in our friendship, instead of empathizing with Zara’s pain.
Pardon me for wondering why I agreed to go for this movie, after successfully resisting K3G, KHNH, MHN et al…
Pardon me for paying more attention to the ushers at E-Square, who reprimanded those using their cell phones in the hall, and escorting them out (probably to fine them), than to the dialogues.
Pardon me for asking you to go grab a DVD/VCD of Morning Raga (it disappeared from cinemas within a week) and avoid this sob-story like the plague.
Pardon me for resisting the great Indian tradition of extravagant Bollywood love stories.
Pardon me for praying I never, ever, again have to do this as a family duty.

Yes, amazing review! Agree with Anonymous about bringing the Razzies to India. What gleeful fun! Do you watch "Kareena Kareena"? It's not an EEEkta Kapoooorrr product! :)

Is make belief really that bad?
First they made stories about fairies and goody goody things to take people's mind of their miseries. Soon people didnt like it. They didnt think it was real enough!
Now they make stories of destruction and miseries and they are a hit. Have we turned into beasts who feel less miserable only when we see others more miserable.
Ofcourse the Happy Ending farce is an eye wash for that easily bribed conscience.
For me persoanlly, great, good, bad or horrible a movie is , they all deserve an A for effort.

Hola - I sure managed to generate alot of comments with this post. Generally I stay away from movies a la VZ, considering I have little patience for them...if they are being screened on TV, I might be persuaded to watch for 20-25 minutes but then I drift off...being forced to go through this experience made me want to lash out..voila here it is! Hope I've not offended too many people with my take on the movie; I got the feeling some of you liked it. Each to its own I say, just don't put me through it again!

Got his humorous forward on the movie - had to post it here:-
"For those who have seen the pathetic movie and remember the even more pathetic poetry that shahrukh recited in the courtroom, READ AHEAD!!

Welcome aboard Uber - keep visiting :-)

Madusa,
LOL..yeah if you noticed most of Saima's dupattas had this delicat crochet embroidery...this was 'coz her nani insisted that the girls do this...in Muslims, apparently, only widows wear unadorned clothes. Saima did resist most such conventions, but this was one such convention she didn't bother with, since she enjoyed doing crochet...she'd offered to teach me but then...

Great review here ! I've been toying with the idea of seeing VZ, generally would have avoided it like the plague but [sheepishly..lol]I too have been bitten by the 'mera des syndrome'..grey grey London does that you..lol..so hey DO forgive me..IF i DO watch it :->

btw. thanks for the comment on caferati, learnt of it here, and tried my luck with a piece of sample writing and hey voila..I was IN :->

Pincushion said...

...and one more thing, thank you for linking to me :->
have done likewise !

G Shrivastava said...

Pincushion - LOL..my friend A.Diddy calls these VZ-type flicks "Made for the NRI" so I guess you would get all mushy abt it...I probably have so lil patience for them, since I've never been a BIG movie buff...so, whatever! Watch at your own peril, are my last words on the subject ;-)

Thrilled to know you decided to join Caferati - me thinks it's a cool idea and a great way to get constructive crit for our work and hone our skills! Had linked you a while ago...and no thanks necc for that. Believe me, no altruistic motive existed..was making life easier for me by having the links all in one place ;-) One big incestous family, eh, we bloggers?

Its very interesting that we have contrasting reviews in our blogs about VZ. Well I watched this movie expecting it to be a a tearful, painful saga I had to go though. But I was pleasantly surprised by the slickness , the music and the conception coming from Yash chopra. Are you new to Bollywood to be really expecting a dose of reality in movies:).As Menon pointed out, Can you really take on with reality happening around the world. How much reality you really enjoy on TV news these days. Well all movies cannot be romantic comdies all the time. Well may be I was looking at the half full glass and you the other half. I can assure you ,on a different day sometime in your future , you would love to watch this movie again.

Like your blogs.

mmmm... yea, checked out Gvenum's blog entry on VZ - wow! guy really loved the movie!!!!
somehow, i cudn't stand it - and even though i LUV all three actors - SRK, Rani, Preity... mmm... stranger things have happened.

G Shrivastava said...

Hey Gvenum - just repld in detail to your comment, on your ow post abt VZ. As I said, each to it's own! that movie simply wasn't my cuppa tea...

Rahul - Preity admittedly has flair and very stylish. Rani M has improved so much lately...but SRK? hmm..me finds stagnation there, tho admittedly he's done a decent job of portraying the guy imprisoned for 22 yrs. And then Swades seems to be diff too - let's see now!

G Shrivastava said...

And oh - do come again Gvenum, irrespective of the stark difference in POV over VZ! :-)

Hey Gee,
I was following your review completely...until you started praising Morning Raga - I felt the movie was a very amateurish attempt. I have no dispute with you over Veer Zaara however. SRK is just blea! (Sorry Parth, but this isn't your blog :-p). Will be posting my review of Swades as soon as I see it...
