Satisfied by what’s on my plate…

Last month I picked up two books from the Strand Sale - having bought two design books for my brother, I found my budget compromised for a second time that weekend! So I played “In-Pin-Safety-Pin” and brought down the books in my own shopping cart from ten to two.

I’m happy with my final choice, for not only did these books satisfy my rather finicky literary tastes and held me mesmerized for as long as I had the book in my hand, but also had me returning to the book as soon as I could, to see it to its denouement. Having finished both of them, I’ve posted reviews on Literary Mosaic

Bluebeard’s Egg –Margaret Atwood
Lord of the Flies – William Golding

I’ve gone back to my collection of short stories by Rabindranath Tagore, having reclaimed it from my bhabhi and am making my way through it slowly and surely, despite the rather tragic endings to all the stories and Tagore’s tendancy to portray most women as either nagging housewives or sacrificial victims of society. The Madonna-Whore dichotomy quite annoys me…

Top 5 Songs of the Moment:

1. Have a Nice Day – Bon Jovi :-)
2. Gin-Soaked Boy - Divine Comedy

3. Come Get Some – Rooster
4. Suddenly I see - KT Tunstall
5. Inch’Allah – MC Solaar

echo aristera.

I always wondered if it was just Tagore, or whether it is a whole lot of indian writers who portray women two dimensionally. You know, the pativrata or the vaishya. why can't a woman be little of both in literature?

Great music. Especially Gin Soaked Boy.

Aristera - Yes I have...now don't go casting the evil eye on it, lest I stop reading again and truly climb walls in boredom! ;-)
As for 'Have a nica day' - ofcourse it is honey, it is BON JOVI after all :-)

Phal - Echo above statement regarding my reading :-)

You know actually it wasn't just Tagore or the other Indian writer who indluge din dichotomy of thoat sort - infact feminists like Gilbert and Gubar have done extensive study on the matter...and then ofcourse you have (my fav example) Jean Rhys whose heroine in Wide Sargasso Sea is a little of both...
Yes yes VH1 be blessed for those songs!

Interesting reading. I have not read either of the two but now am tempted to pick them up.

And yes, Gin Soaked Boy rocks!
