Just the knowledge that a good book is awaiting one at the end of a long day makes that day happier. - Kathleen Norris

Books to the ceiling
Books to the sky.
My pile of books
Are a mile high.
How I love them!
How I need them!
I'll have a long beard
By the time I read them.
- Arnold Lobel

Volume of Books owned:-
I'd ideally love to have one of those libraries where there are shelves from ceiling to floor, lined with books - a treasure for anyone who inherits it! ;-) As of now, I am the proud owner of around 350+ books (guessing - since I've never really counted them) and it's growing all the time.

Last Book I Bought:-
I picked up three books last week at Crossword, Sohrab Hall (they need a Bigger Crossword in Pune and an OxfordBookstore too).
1.Breakfast at Tiffany's - Truman Capote
(I've been trying to lay my hands on the movie for a long time so when I saw the book I figured I could atleast read it)
2.A Vindication of the Rights of Woman - Mary Wollstonecraft
(The first feminist manifesto - this along with Beauvoir's Second Sex has been on my reading list for a while now; glad to finally get it! - she, incidentally died giving birth to Mary Shelley of Frankenstein fame...)
3. The Great Fire - Shirley Hazzard
(Short-listed for the Orange Prize 2004)

Last Book I read:-
If this means last book that I finished it would have to be La Nez sur la Vitrine by Abdeldjamel Kader (Francophone writer from Algeria)

One Book I Couldn't Finish:-
Holy shit - going by my god-awgul track record since I've moved to Pune this is a very long list. Been appalled at the number of books I'm leaving unfinished - the last one would be Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum.

Five Books I Cherish:-
*Groan* You mean I have to narrow it down? Ok let's see, in random order, from the top of my head:
1. Little Women - Louisa May Alcott
(For its narration and for filling my childhood with silly romantic notions about sisterhood and friendships and love - not to mention those cozy Christmas dinners, family bonding, skating over frozen lakes, painting in France,....and lots more)
2. Not Without My Daughter - Betty Mahmoody
(For opening my eyes to the horrors that exist for a woman trying to survive in a closed, patriarchal society and to the uncertainty of life. For opening up an entire new genre of books to me. For moving me to tears with its evocative narration.)
3. Sybil - Flora Rheta Schreiber
(For its mind-blowing account of how a person with 16 personalities overcame her schizophrenia and came to terms with the gruesome tortures inflicted on her as a child, which forced her to withdraw from reality and escape into one of her many personalities each time the world got too much for her to handle)
4. Blasphemy &/or My Feudal Lord - Tehmina Durrani
(I lean towards feminist novels - what can I say?)
5. Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood
(For its vision of a dystopia, a totalitarian world a la Orwell's 1984 - depicting what could happen if casually held attitudes about women are taken to their logical conclusions. It is warning to the human race, a warning against our excesses, a warning against the increasing use of nuclear warfare and chemical products, a warning against totalitarianism.)

- These are a very random selection of five books that mean alot to me - the list is actually much longer. A couple more are mentioned in the sidebar under "Must Read" though most of them match those I've recommended there! Amedee - Ionesco, Waiting for Godot - Beckett, Doll's House - Ibsen, Equus - Shaffer , Pygmalion - Shaw would be the five plays that have had the maximum impact on me...

Five people I tag:-
Ouch now this a tough one since most people have already done this, so I'll tag
Elixir, Deepak, Titash, Paddy, Arka, Wandering Dervish, Anil, Pincushion...oh I seem to have exceeded the number. LOL - it's an interesting meme to fill out - so whoever wants to, please take up the baton!

I too love collecting/owning books. Nothing like spending quiet time amidsts a collection of books.

But this is your most intimidating post. Hell, I haven't even read 15% of the books you mentioned. Goes on to show, how much of treasure trove is waiting to be discovered. I am already feeling miserable...

Amit - Hey I'm sure i'd be saying that myself, that I've not even read 15% of the books on your list! That's the thing about books - you've never read enough!

Elixir - Umm is all well up there? My god what's with the tantrum babes?

WD - Ouch dunno how I missed that post - going there right now....

Really nice compilation. I am tempted to pick some of the books from this list and read them. The next step is to visit my library website and reserve them. Thanks, you are my reco buddy :-)

Oh no...not this...I was dreading it ...but you know what I can escape on a technicality! You are supposed to tag ONLY 5 people and I'm safely outside that list..har..har..har ;)!!

thou art forgiven!:-)
i think i have a bigger list of 'books that i have bought and i really want to read but are never getting read' , than the classical categories of 'books i haven't read' or 'books i have read'.

the primary one on this first list is 'master and margarita'.

G Shrivastava said...

Parth - Heheh, I like the sound of that "reco buddy"!

Anil - Arre but why do you want to escape?

Swathi - I've (unfortunately) not read any other work by Atwood; they are on my list but that list is very long;-) Hope to see you ard again...

Elixir - Ok now it's Thursday so do I see you filling the meme? ;-)

Phal - Yeah yeah want to pick it up. Especially since close buddy has been recommended it since like forever - finished reading the book and abso loved it!

Kaashyapeya - LOL!

WD - :-) Yep I know, I have so many books on my shelf that still need to be read, but they keep getting neglected as I keep buying more books. Lately I've been lethargic and fine myself rather apathetic towards reading so that list is growing all the more! :-( Hopefully the phase is near its end coz I find myself reading more like the old days now...Amen

*gulp* i havta dont i?? sigh...ill do it, n neways i owe u an apology for my radically steeeeeuuuupid comment!! *highly embarassed*

G Shrivastava said...

Elixir - LOL you don't have to if you really don't want to. Just that I thought that noise up there was just a silly tantrum ;-) And since I thought it was just a silly tantrum, hey no apologies necc! Chill...

The Arnold Lobel poem/quote reminds me of Premier Bookstore in Bangalore - one of my favorites places on Rarth.

I'd ideally love to have one of those libraries where there are shelves from ceiling to floor, lined with books I too had a similar dream few years back. Now, I carry 80GB HDD in the size of a walkman, which contains all my technical + novels in soft copies. Is this a reverse curse of technology??

Btw, nice post...

aah here goes (second time):
I dislike most of these books here, but then to each his/ her own. but am glad u hv intoduced me to so many good books ("clock work orange" being a big exception)... o andi think (in retrospect) "not w/o my daughter" is a bit too racy and trashy...out and out american potboiler...very a la "da vinci"...dont frown geets!
but here's my list too:

1. catcher in the rye (salinger)
2. waiting for godot (beckett)
3. golden gate (seth)
4. god of small things (roy)
5. of love and other demons (marquez)

kunal.

Hey G,

Really nice post. I remember you talking about Sybil at Max's place.

Just a small correction: The Doll's House is by Henrik Ibsen, who is often studied in parallel with Strindberg. I confess to not having read the play. :p
